Gun Incidents

The Infer Trust makes every effort to record and categorise the firearms incidents reported in the UK but we recognise that it is not a complete record.

If you are aware of a gun incident which is not listed please notify us.  You can do this by either sending us the link for an on line report, or a hard copy of a press article to our address.

Thomas Parry has received a year-long suspended sentence and 200 hours unpaid work for possessing an automatic pistol at his home in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Police responding to reports of a domestic incident found the gun, which Parry claimed he was hiding for a man who had dealt him cannabis, in a bedside cabinet. The pistol was discovered in early 2010 but Parry, who was 17 at the time, could not be charged until recently because an officer originally identified the gun as a legal starter pistol.

Billy Doran has pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and Kyle Feeney has pleaded guilty to possession of an air-powered weapon in Kirkdale, Merseyside. The 18-year-olds approached a group of school children during a PE lesson and Doran held a BB gun and demanded they "pass the ball or I'll blow your head off". The pair attempted to flee the scene in a taxi, and pointed the imitation weapon at the driver when he refused them service. They boarded a bus but were arrested by police called to the scene. Doran received a 9-month suspended young offenders' sentence with 12 months supervision and 100 hours of unpaid work, and Feeney received a 12-month community order and mandatory thinking skills programme.

The coroner has recorded an open verdict in an inquest into the death of Charles Harbord, the 68-year-old father of one of Prince Harry's friends, in May (see May incidents). His body was discovered with one of two shotguns belonging to his daughters that were kept in a case in the family home and a shotgun wound to the chest. The inquest found that Harbord inflicted the injuries that led to his death in Gillingham, Dorset but that evidence of his intentions was only circumstantial.

Stuart McDonald has been jailed for 5 years for possession of a firearm that led to a 4-hour siege by police in South Gosforth, Tyne and Wear. Armed officers were called when he took a shotgun, a rifle and ammunition that he had been ordered to keep to his mother's house. McDonald had been acting strangely earlier in the day, crying, drinking heavily and watering plants with bleach and was on licence from a previous 5-year sentence for robbery. He was arrested after protracted negotiations.
