2013/9/24 The Telegraph

An inquest into the murder of a Andrea Johnson who was shot by her husband who also fatally shot himself with his own legally-owned shotgun at their home in Cromer, Norfolk has found that the 44-year-old was unlawfully killed and that her husband took his own life. The 58-year-old Conservative council leader and former mayor had made his wife leave the previous day but asked her to come back to the home where he was waiting with the gun and had written out instructions for their funerals. The Domestic Violence Homicide Review published after the inquest detailed how Keith Johnson had abused his wife for a decade, hitting her so hard at one point that her hearing was damaged. The report suggested that public authorities who could have helped the victim were "blinded by his public image" and by the notion that domestic violence did not happen in affluent areas. It also found that health and social service workers had not received sufficient training to identify, enquire about and communicate abuse as illustrated by the fact that an attempt to commit suicide with an overdose of anti-depressants and alcohol because of marital problems was not communicated to her GP; a series of counselling sessions she received were not recorded in her medical notes; her husband was present at many of her GP appointments; when she called police for help they left when her husband said he would sort it out; and the fact that her relatives did not know how to report the domestic violence.
