The murder of 15-year-old Jessie James was widely reported in the media. The teenager was shot in the Moss Side area of Manchester. His body was found in a park. He had been hit with three bullets fired from a semi-automatic pistol (Times, 11 September 2006). Last month three men were shot and wounded in two separate incidents in Moss Side. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in separate prisons in north west England (Guardian, 10 August 2007). An inquest has recorded a verdict of unlawful killing, but no-one has been charged with Jessie's murder (BBC, 2 June 2010).

A man was shot dead in a car on an industrial estate in Bootle, Merseyside. Passers-by heard shots and found the man. Nine men have been arrested by police investigating the murder (Teletext, 9 December 2009).

A man was shot dead whilst standing by his car in Hornchurch. His 6-year-old daughter was with him and his 2-year-old son was in the car. The shots were fired from another car which drove past. A man has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life after he was extradited from Spain (BBC, 15 September 2010). He is on trial accused of murder and denies the charge (Daily Mail, 21 March 2011).

Two men were killed and two others injured in a shooting at a pub in Salford. A man has appeared in court charged with conspiracy to commit murder (BBC, 3 April 2006). Two people have been given life sentences (see May 2007 Incidents). Another man has been convicted of conspiracy to murder (see May 2009 Incidents).

A gunman who was seen firing at a man in a parked car in Huddersfield later fired at two armed police officers shattering the windscreen of their unmarked car. One had an eye injury from flying glass. Police are trying to trace Marcus Nathaniel Rhoden in connection with the incidents (Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 3 January 2006). Rhoden was jailed for six years and nine months after admitting firing a shot at the officers (see October 2006 Incidents). A second man who was with Rhoden at the time of the shooting has appealed to reduce his minimum jail term (see December 2009 Incidents).

A woman, who was shot in the head on the dance floor at a reggae night in High Wycombe, died later in hospital. A man who is on trial has denied charges of murder, manslaughter and possessing ammunition (BBC, 25 July 2005). Dwayne Houghton was found not guilty of murder but was found to have been in possession of ammunition after his fingerprints were found on a cartridge at the scene of the crime. Another man was trial accused of the victim's manslaughter and two women were accused of perverting the course of justice to cover up the man's involvement but all were acquitted (see October 2009 Incidents).

Peter Gimlinger used a gun to rob a service station in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in January 2009 after they refused to serve alcohol past their licensed hours. He pleaded guilty to armed robbery and was remanded in custody for sentence in January.

Rhys Chant, aged 25, jailed for three years after admitting possessing a
prohibited weapon, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and
common assault on an emergency worker (spitting). In August last year,
Chant confronted a group of men outside his home in Leicester, Leicestershire while armed with a stun gun, a
knuckle duster and a machete. The men said they were looking for a friend
of Chant’s, though one of them threatened to stab Chant during the
conflict. Police intervened before anyone was injured. Chant claimed the
Chinese-made stun gun, disguised as a torch, belonged to someone else, but
refused to give a name. On sentencing, the judge said: “…In relation to the
Taser, the law indicates a minimum sentence with a starting point of five
years… I have to look at whether there are exceptional circumstances here
where I don't have to impose the minimum term… There were five men bent on
either a confrontation or possible violence and I find that is significant
mitigation.”
