A man is in a stable condition in hospital after being shot in the leg in Moxley, West Midlands. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

A man was shot in the head with an air rifle as he used a cash machine in Whalley Range, Greater Manchester. He was shot at from a nearby block of flats. The victim was taken to hospital where he had to undergo surgery to remove a pellet. An airgun was seized from a flat and a man arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Three men, two of them teenagers, have been arrested on suspicion of poaching after they were found driving in a van containing three dead deer in Penkridge, Staffordshire. The police found a modified air rifle with a gas cylinder and silencer and three hunting knives.

A sandwich bar worker at the Bluewater shopping centre, Kent, was threatened with a gun by robbers who fled with more than £20,000. She was made to watch as the robbers emptied the safe.

A man had his ear bitten by two men who then produced a gun and fired a shot. No-one was struck by the bullet. The incident took place outside a house in Norwood, south London. One man has been arrested in connection with the attack (Local Guardian, 5 January 2010).

A man from Hemsby, Norfolk, has appeared before magistrates and denied threatening to shoot his girlfriend. He is alleged to have called 999 and told an operator he had a gun.

A heron who is well know in Haversham, Buckinghamshire, has been left paralysed in an airgun attack. Two pellets were lodged in his spine. He has been treated with painkillers, steroids and operated on to remove one of the pellets but the other one is dangerously close to the spine. Youths had been spotted firing an air rifle in the area where the heron lived.

Keith Thompson was seen with a gun on a playing field in Newmarket, Suffolk. One witness described how he heard it being fired. Thompson was arrested and the gun shown to be a .177 calibre air rifle. Thompson pleaded guilty to possession of an unloaded air weapon in a public place. He said he had been shooting on private land with family members earlier that day, had been drinking and was travelling back from the home of his sister. The sound was of the barrel clicking open. He was given a 12-month community order to include 40 hours unpaid work. As part of the order he was banned from carrying an air rifle.
