A man armed with a handgun burst into a bookmakers in the centre of Manchester and pointed the gun at a woman working behind the counter. He escaped with a small amount of money in a bag.

Jason Schofield pulled the trigger of a ball-bearing gun while aiming it at a group of men talking near his flat in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. He was high on the drug Mcat at the time. He admitted possessing an imitation firearm and been sentenced to 21 months.

Armed police stormed a home in Fulham, west London, and arrested an alleged gunman. They had received a tip-off that two men armed with a shotgun and a pistol had been seen arriving at the house.

David Reilly has pleaded guilty to robbing a shop in Kessingland, Suffolk, in November 2010 (see Incidents). A gun was said to have been brandished during the robbery. He was released on bail until his sentencing.

A sawn-off shotgun was found hidden under a bed at a house in Norris Green, Liverpool, where an 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. A woman was also arrested. A man and a woman were arrested after a self-loading pistol was discovered during a raid on a house in Stockbridge Village.

A gunman has robbed a post office in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. Staff handed over cash after he threatened staff and customers. The raid is believed to be linked to an attempted robbery on a bank in the town four days earlier (see below).

A woman was found dead with gunshot wounds in the attic of a house in Woodlesford, Leeds. The weapon was apparently a shotgun (Yorkshire Evening Post, 25 January 2011). A man has appeared in court charged with murder (BBC, 27 January 2011). An inquest has opened into the death and has been adjourned by the coroner pending the outcome of further proceedings (Yorkshire Evening Post, 22 February 2011).

Mark Connelly waved a wartime handgun at a group of teenagers while he was drunk. He was branded "irresponsible and foolish" by a judge following the incident in Linwood, Renfrewshire, in January 2010. He admitted possessing the prohibited weapon without holding a firearms certificate. He was ordered to carry out 400 hours community service. The gun, which was unloaded and incapable of firing bullets, was a war memento which had previously belonged to Connelly's grandfather.

A man and a boy were shot in the head with a shotgun in Bury, Greater Manchester. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and two others on suspicion of violent disorder (This is Lancashire, 24 January 2011).
