The Infer Trust makes every effort to record and categorise the firearms incidents reported in the UK but we recognise that it is not a complete record.

2013/3/5 Nottingham Post

Firearms officers with machine guns arrested four people in a planned operation after a shotgun was fired through the window of a house in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. No one was injured in the attack.


2013/3/5 Chronicle Live

Police stopped a train and arrested two men after they were seen carrying a gun in the centre of Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. Officers tracked the pair onto the train using CCTV footage and intercepted them on board, causing delays to other passengers across the city. The men were arrested and found to be in possession of a BB gun.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with possessing a Glock 19 pistol, some nine millimetre and .38 calibre ammunition and a flick knife in Nottingham.


2013/3/5 Dumfries & Galloway Standard

A bomb disposal team was deployed after grenades and live and blank ammunition were found at a waste management site in Dumfries. The day before a blank-firing pistol was also found in the town and handed in to police. No one was injured and officers have begun an investigation into the source of the explosives.

A 41-year-old man has died after he was shot at his home in Johnstone, Renfrewshire. Armed officers were called after he sustained serious injuries and he was taken to hospital but died the following day. The victim and his friends had allegedly been playing Russian roulette with the gun at the property when the fatal shot was fired.

Luke Hewitt-Hall, 21, has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to hiding a sawn-off shotgun in the home of Shanki Steadman. Steadman has been sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders' institution after being found guilty of possessing the weapon at the property in Derby. The gun was found in the cellar by Steadman's housemate after the 18-year-old allowed Hewitt-Hall to leave what he described as "something minor" at her shared home.


2013/3/5 Tottenham & Wood Green Journal

Courtney Matthew has been jailed for four years for threatening seven young teenagers in order to steal their mobile phones as they walked to and from school in Wood Green, north London. He told the victims he had a gun, knife or Taser in his bag and demanded they hand over their phones, escaping with a handset on six occasions. He is reported to have attacked the pupils in an attempt to pay off an outstanding drug debt.

Lynne Smith has been been given a 12-month suspended sentence with a three-month 12-hour curfew for running a brothel in Walsall, West Midlands. During an investigation into illegal activities, police recovered a stun gun and a CS gas canister from her home in the county.

John Lucas, 50, has been jailed for seven years for possession of illegal drugs, guns and ammunition at his home in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Police recovered £164,000 of cocaine, £12,000 of cannabis, £11,000 of cannabis and £38,000 in cash as well as four gun barrels and their striker units and live ammunition.


2013/3/5 The Scotsman

Gary Smith, 18, has been given a community payback order with 3 years' supervision and 200 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to assaulting a shopkeeper with an imitation firearm during an attempted robbery at his cornershop in Armadale, West Lothian. Smith pointed the weapon at the victim and demanded money while a female customer was in the store. However he was unmasked and recognised by the victim when the shopkeeper noticed his hand was shaking and sought to disarm him before he fled. Smith later called police to confess and was arrested for the attack, but no weapon was recovered. Since the attack, the shop owner has lost business and received death threats from members of the local community who hold him responsible for Smith's conviction.
